We love food, we make art. This is the concept that unites all the Fine Artichoke printmakers, and nobody is a better example of this than the dessert-lovin’ fireball that is artist Sarah Stern. When she’s not in the studio making prints, you may spot Sarah snapping photos of sweets around NYC; her subjects lately have included the concoction known as a Dirty Shirley at Sweetiepie, macaroons at Kee’s Chocolates, and gelato popsicles at Popbar.
In between her culinary investigations in the city and preparing for Chicago’s Renegade Craft Fair, we managed to ask Sarah a few questions about her life and work.
Fine Artichoke: So, what do you love more about living in New York- the food or the art?
Sarah Stern: Tough question! Both are so great here, and the beauty of it is that you don’t even need to try hard to find them. You can just stop at a hot dog cart or look up at the buildings and see amazing old painted signs. If I had to decide though, I’d say the art. I’m a California girl at heart and I really miss the great Mexican food there!
F.A.: Ah, yes, the unending plight of the Californian in NY- always fiending for a decent burrito. Do you cook a lot?
S.S: I love food, but I am not a good cook! I’m more of a food “appreciator.” My role in the kitchen is sandwich maker, salad maker and sous-chef. I’d like to learn to cook some day, but for now I’m kind of OK with it. I really hope to learn to be a great desert-baker someday. I think deserts are totally inspiring, and I photograph them when I’m out in New York all the time.
F.A.: What current/upcoming projects are you working on?
S.S.: I’m doing the Chicago Renegade Craft Fair on September 11th and 12th, so I’ve been making a lot of new prints all summer to get ready. I’m also making greeting cards, as well as onesies, bibs and tote bags. And everything I’m bringing to Renegade will also be up on my Etsy site.
Sarah’s “Summer Citrus” print invokes another of her inspirations: the fresh, bright produce labels slapped to the sides of crates bursting with California fruit. The crisp colors bring the spirit of Summer and the bounty that comes with it into the kitchen year-round. Pick one up today and feel the sunshine for yourself!
